Getting started on meshing - part I

<<<back<<<

3. Starting

First, choose a maxis mesh (maxis only, no modifying other peoples meshes unless you have their permission!)
It makes things a LOT easier to start out with a mesh that is pretty close to what you want. It will be hard to make a decent looking long dress from the b200fafit short skirt mesh, go with the b333fafit long skirt mesh instead and so on. The less you'll have to modify, the easier your life will be.
You can check out the different meshes in SimPose to get the right one. (note: this doesn't necesarily go for head meshes, if you want to make a unique mesh it's easier to start from a bald base head.)

Open up Milkshape and Import the mesh by choosing File->Import-> The Sims SKN
You will be working in the first 3 windows, they are front view, side view and top view. The last window is the preview window, you can see the model from any angle you'd like by dragging the mouse. If you right-click on the window you can choose different ways to see the preview.

Remember to save a lot as you go along. Save as a ms3d file as you work, and only export the mesh as a skn file to see it in simpose.
It's a good idea to save different versions of the mesh as you work. The ctrl-z (undo) option is good for fixing slip-ups, but sometimes it is good to be able to go back to a previous version. I won't be commenting on the save issue as I go along, I'll just assume you know it's good thing to do frequent back-ups ;)
